Tech Life Review: First artificial intelligence gadgets for the home

Angelena Iglesia

Tech expert Kris Abel rounds up the latest artificial intelligence products for your home that aim to help your at-home life more convenient.

Oral B iO Series 7 Toothbrush: $350

This artificially intelligent toothbrush senses the way it’s stuck in your mouth, using vibrating bristles to “feel” the surface of your teeth and create a map sent to your phone displaying each dirty tooth (dark blue) as it needs more brushing (light blue) and finally becomes clean (white).

Red means you’ve brushed too hard, warning you to check for bleeding gums.

An emoji clock happily encourages you to brush for two minutes, which is worthwhile as the vibrations effectively remove plaque for a “from-the-dentist” feel sure to save you dental fees over time.

Information Technology Services brings USC together for online learning

Angelena Iglesia

When COVID-19 threatened to disrupt USC’s family ties and sense of connection this semester, experts in USC Information Technology Services quickly stepped in.

They had to provide a virtual space online where Trojan students, faculty, staff and alumni could get together while they stayed physically apart. And they had to do it fast.

“We moved up to fifth gear in March, and we haven’t really backed down from there,” said Veronica Garcia, associate chief information officer of application services. “Last semester was the disruptor, and it was about reacting and learning how to be online. This semester, we knew we had to provide more.”

Dozens of ITS developers, coders and technicians studied ways to use technology to bring Trojans together. They were joined by ITS communication and training experts to plan, promote and teach people how to use the new tech. The result: virtual learning for students this fall that

HONOR Router 3: Wi-Fi 6: speed for up to 16 devices on 5GHz

Angelena Iglesia

The jury is out on routers.

In the world of technology, some people say router (rhymes with outer) and some people say router (rhymes with shooter) and many arguments have ensued in the space in-between.

Only one thing is for sure as noted here, the woodworking tool (image here) is a router (sounds like rowter).

There is one other certainty in the world of routers (the IT devices), we (the users) take them for granted, never think about whether we need to update the ones we use every day and whether we should be upgrading.

But with the longer-term impact of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) lockdown now becoming clearer for users in every world nation, we are perhaps starting to look at the performance of our home tech hubs

Plugging-in

As such then, the Inspect-a-Gadget elves decided that now was the time to check out the HONOR Router 3.

Auto-follow action sports drone

Over on Kickstarter, a group of engineers who are passionate about action sports are more than halfway to their goal to fund the production of AirDog, an easy-to-use personal drone. AirDog is “a small, agile, foldable quadcopter, especially designed for video shooting action sports with the GoPro camera.” It will follow your every move and can withstand rain and freezing temperatures.
